Leon Chaitow - Fascia! - 30/10/2012
Leon urged us to look up AT Still's quotes re. fascia and water and the work of the Steccos, an Italian family who are involved in fascial research.
During the talk Leon went through the different techniques that can be used on fascia and what happens during treatment. This was really useful and applicable to technique classes and clinic practice, especially thinking about CCA questions about what we are doing during treatment, what change are we making with our techniques. Unfortunately, despite moments of humour this felt a very dry talk, more like a lecture, with lots of research presentation and very little audience engagement. Which was a shame, Mr Chaitow is obviously a very intelligent and thoughtful osteopath.
Main points were:
Endocanabinoids - what used to be thought of as endorphins. Released with soft tissue, HVTs and myofascial work.
Mechanocoupling - physical loan becomes a chemical reaction.
MET - isometric contraction of the muscles stretches the sarcomere and fascia.
We were urged to read the book by Paul Standley "Myofascial Release and Strain Counterstrain"
